Evil Eye and EnvyThe Evil Eye and Envy in Islam: Reality, Treatment, and Protection
Praise be to Allah, Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and all his companions.
The evil eye and envy are matters whose foundation is established in the Qur’an and Sunnah. However, a Muslim must understand them according to the way of Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah: we affirm what the religion affirms, but we do not open the door to obsession, accuse people without evidence, or abandon tawakkul, adhkar, and beneficial means.
Allah Most High says: “And from the evil of an envier when he envies.” [Al-Falaq: 5]
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “The evil eye is real. If anything were to precede divine decree, the evil eye would precede it. And if you are asked to wash, then wash.” Narrated by Muslim.
DefinitionWhat Is the Difference Between the Evil Eye and Envy?
Envy is wishing that a blessing be removed from another person, or disliking what Allah has given him. It is a blameworthy trait and dangerous for the person’s religion.
As for the evil eye, it is an effect that may happen due to the look of a soul that is amazed or envious, by Allah’s permission and decree. Not everyone who admires something is envious, and not every illness or distress is caused by the evil eye.
Established RealityIs the Evil Eye Real?
Yes. The evil eye is real, as established in the authentic hadith. But its reality does not mean that a Muslim makes it the explanation for everything that happens, accuses people, or leaves medicine, work, and proper means.
From Islamic guidance is that when a Muslim sees something that amazes him, he supplicates for blessing.
When Seeing Something You AdmireSupplicating for Blessing
O Allah, bless it.
May Allah bless it.
What Allah wills; there is no power except with Allah.
Repeat: said when seeing something that amazes a person
Treatment for the Evil Eye and Envy
Treatment 1Islamic Ruqyah
The Muslim recites Al-Fatihah, Ayat al-Kursi, Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas, and makes the authentic supplications.
In the name of Allah, I perform ruqyah for you, from everything that harms you, from the evil of every soul or envious eye. May Allah heal you. In the name of Allah, I perform ruqyah for you.
Repeat: said in ruqyah when needed
Narrated by Muslim.
Treatment 2Preserving Al-Falaq and An-Nas
Surat Al-Falaq and Surat An-Nas are among the greatest things by which a Muslim seeks refuge from harms, and Surat Al-Falaq explicitly mentions the envier.
Treatment 3The Washing of the One Who Caused the Evil Eye If Known Without Injustice or Accusation
If the person who caused the evil eye is known, or it is most likely due to clear indicators, and he is asked to wash or make wudu, then he should do so and not refuse, due to the saying of the Prophet: “And if you are asked to wash, then wash.”
However, it is not permissible to accuse people based on mere suspicion, harm them, or spread talk about them.
Daily ProtectionDaily Adhkar
Among the greatest forms of protection is preserving the morning and evening adhkar, sleep adhkar, reciting Ayat al-Kursi, and reciting Al-Ikhlas and the Mu'awwidhat.
In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing in the earth or in the sky can harm, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
Repeat: three times in the morning and evening
