Purification and PrayerNullifiers of Wudu
All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and companions.
Wudu is a condition for the validity of prayer for one who is in a state of minor impurity. Therefore, a Muslim needs to know what nullifies wudu and what does not, so he worships Allah with insight, without negligence and without waswasah. Many people make mistakes in this topic: some pray after their wudu has been nullified, while others repeat wudu because of doubts and whispers that do not require it.
{يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا قُمْتُمْ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ فَاغْسِلُوا وُجُوهَكُمْ وَأَيْدِيَكُمْ إِلَى المَرَافِقِ وَامْسَحُوا بِرُءُوسِكُمْ وَأَرْجُلَكُمْ إِلَى الكَعْبَيْنِ}O you who believe, when you rise for prayer, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, wipe your heads, and wash your feet up to the ankles. [Al-Ma'idah 5:6]
Allah does not accept the prayer of any of you when he has hadath until he performs wudu.
Agreed upon.
DefinitionWhat Are the Nullifiers of Wudu?
The nullifiers of wudu are matters that, if they occur to a person who has wudu, remove his purification from minor impurity. His prayer is not valid until he performs wudu again.
This article discusses nullifiers of wudu, not matters that require ghusl. Some matters require ghusl, such as janabah and the end of menstruation or postpartum bleeding, and these are greater than merely nullifying wudu.
Important NoteWhat Requires Ghusl Is Not Merely a Nullifier of Wudu
It is important to distinguish between minor impurity, which wudu removes, and major impurity, for which wudu is not enough and ghusl is required. Whoever becomes junub, emits semen with desire, or a woman whose menstruation or postpartum bleeding ends, cannot pray with wudu alone until ghusl is performed.
{وَإِنْ كُنْتُمْ جُنُبًا فَاطَّهَّرُوا}If you are in a state of janabah, then purify yourselves. [Al-Ma'idah 5:6]
When we speak about nullifiers of wudu, we mean what requires wudu before prayer. What requires ghusl is greater than that.
First Nullifier1. Anything Exiting from the Two Private Passages
One of the clearest nullifiers of wudu is anything exiting from the two private passages, such as urine, stool, wind, madhiy, wadi, and similar matters.
{أَوْ جَاءَ أَحَدٌ مِنْكُمْ مِنَ الغَائِطِ أَوْ لَامَسْتُمُ النِّسَاءَ فَلَمْ تَجِدُوا مَاءً فَتَيَمَّمُوا صَعِيدًا طَيِّبًا}Or one of you comes from relieving himself, or you have touched women and cannot find water, then perform tayammum with clean earth. [Al-Ma'idah 5:6]
He should not leave until he hears a sound or finds a smell.
Agreed upon.
Passing wind nullifies wudu, as do urine, stool, and the usual discharges from the front or back passage.
Second Nullifier2. Deep Sleep
Sleep in which a person loses awareness, such that he would not notice if something exited from him, is a nullifier of wudu according to a group of scholars because it is a likely cause of hadath occurring without awareness.
As for light drowsiness in which a person’s awareness remains, such as briefly nodding while sitting and then waking, many scholars do not treat this like deep sleep.
A practical guideline: if a person slept deeply and was unaware of what was around him, he should perform wudu. Mere drowsiness with awareness should not become a door to waswasah.
Third Nullifier3. Loss of Reason
Loss of reason through fainting, intoxication, full anesthesia, insanity, or similar conditions nullifies wudu, because a person who loses reason does not know whether anything exited from him. Loss of reason is stronger than sleep in this regard.
Whoever faints, undergoes full anesthesia, or loses awareness should perform wudu when he wakes and wants to pray.
Fourth Nullifier4. Eating Camel Meat
Eating camel meat nullifies wudu according to the stronger view, because of the authentic text concerning it.
The Prophet ﷺ was asked: Should we perform wudu after eating camel meat? He said: Yes, perform wudu after eating camel meat. He was asked: Should we perform wudu after eating sheep meat? He said: If you wish, perform wudu, and if you wish, do not perform wudu.
Narrated by Muslim.
This ruling is specific to eating camel meat. Camel milk, or broth in which no meat is eaten, is not treated like the meat according to many scholars. Whoever performs wudu after broth cooked with camel meat to avoid disagreement, there is no harm.
Fifth Nullifier5. Touching the Private Part
Touching the front or back private part directly with the hand, without a barrier, is an issue over which scholars differed. A group of scholars held that it nullifies wudu, especially when done without a barrier.
Whoever touches his private part should perform wudu.
Narrated by Abu Dawud, At-Tirmidhi, An-Nasa'i, and Ibn Majah; authenticated by a number of scholars.
Based on this, whoever directly touches his private part with his hand without a barrier, the stronger and safer position is to perform wudu, unlike touching through a barrier such as clothing.
IssueDoes touching a woman nullify wudu?
This is a well-known issue of scholarly disagreement. A group of scholars held that merely touching a woman does not nullify wudu unless something exits, or unless it is with desire according to those who hold that view. The default is that purification remains until a nullifier is established, so a Muslim should not make mere handshaking or touching his wife a cause of waswasah.
IssueDoes bleeding nullify wudu?
Blood exiting from somewhere other than the two private passages, such as a wound or nosebleed, does not nullify wudu according to a group of scholars, although some scholars recommended wudu for a large amount of blood or considered it a nullifier. Whoever performs wudu because of a large amount of blood to avoid disagreement may do so, as long as it does not open the door to waswasah.
IssueDoes vomiting nullify wudu?
Vomiting does not nullify wudu according to a group of scholars, while others held that a large amount of vomit nullifies wudu. It is safer for someone who vomits a lot to perform wudu if easy, but it should not be said that every small amount of vomit definitely nullifies wudu.
IssueDoes laughing nullify wudu?
Laughing does not nullify wudu in itself. If loud laughter occurs during prayer, it invalidates the prayer according to scholars, but wudu itself is not nullified merely by laughing according to the correct view.
IssueDoes eating or drinking nullify wudu?
Eating and drinking do not nullify wudu, except eating camel meat as mentioned earlier. However, it is recommended for a Muslim to clean his mouth after eating food that leaves odor or residue that may harm worshipers, especially before going to the masjid.
IssueDoes touching impurity nullify wudu?
Touching impurity does not nullify wudu in itself, but the impurity must be washed from the body, clothing, or place. If urine from a child gets on someone’s hand, he washes the impurity, but wudu is not required merely because he touched it unless a nullifier exits from him.
IssueDoes changing a child’s diaper nullify wudu?
Changing a child’s diaper does not nullify wudu by itself. If a person touches impurity, he washes his hand and whatever was affected. If he directly touches the child’s private part without a barrier, then it is safer to perform wudu because it enters under touching the private part according to those who hold that view.
IssueDoes doubt nullify wudu?
Doubt does not nullify wudu. Whoever had wudu and then doubts, “Did I pass wind?” or “Was my wudu broken?” remains upon his purification until he is certain of hadath. This is a great principle for treating waswasah: certainty is not removed by doubt.
Chronic ExcusesWhat Should a Person with Urinary or Wind Incontinence Do?
Whoever has a continuous hadath, such as urinary incontinence or continuous passing of wind, and cannot find enough time to purify himself and pray, has special rulings. He performs wudu after the prayer time enters, takes precautions as much as possible, then prays. What exits after that within the time does not harm him if it is continuous and he cannot prevent it.
These matters differ according to a person’s condition, so one with a chronic excuse should ask the people of knowledge about his specific case, so he can worship Allah without hardship or waswasah.
{فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ}Fear Allah as much as you are able. [At-Taghabun 64:16]
{مَا يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ لِيَجْعَلَ عَلَيْكُمْ مِنْ حَرَجٍ وَلَكِنْ يُرِيدُ لِيُطَهِّرَكُمْ وَلِيُتِمَّ نِعْمَتَهُ عَلَيْكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ}Allah does not intend to place hardship upon you, but He intends to purify you and complete His favor upon you so that you may be grateful. [Al-Ma'idah 5:6]

- Thinking that touching any impurity nullifies wudu.
- Not performing wudu after deep sleep.
- Not performing wudu after eating camel meat despite the authentic text.
- Confusing what requires ghusl with what merely nullifies wudu.

- Being careless with prayer after being certain of hadath.
QuestionIs wudu required after every prayer?
No. Wudu is not required for every prayer if a Muslim remains upon purification. If someone performed wudu for Dhuhr and his wudu did not break, he may pray Asr with the same wudu.
QuestionIf I doubt whether I passed wind, should I repeat wudu?
Do not repeat wudu because of mere doubt. Wudu is not nullified except by certainty or a strong likelihood that takes the place of certainty. Whispers and passing thoughts should not be considered.
QuestionDoes light sleep nullify wudu?
Light sleep in which a person’s awareness remains does not nullify wudu according to many scholars. Deep, overwhelming sleep nullifies wudu.
QuestionDoes madhiy nullify wudu?
Yes. Madhiy nullifies wudu, and whatever it touches of the body or clothing must be washed according to the majority of scholars. It does not require ghusl, unlike semen that exits with desire.
QuestionDoes semen only nullify wudu?
Semen exiting with desire does not merely require wudu; it requires ghusl because it is a cause of major purification. Intercourse also requires ghusl even if ejaculation does not occur.
QuestionDo vaginal discharges nullify wudu?
Discharges exiting from the private passages generally nullify wudu, but women may experience continuous or frequent discharges, and the details differ according to their type and continuity. Whoever is tested with this should ask the people of knowledge about her situation and avoid waswasah.
QuestionDoes kissing one’s wife nullify wudu?
Mere kissing does not nullify wudu according to the stronger view if nothing exits. Whoever performs wudu to avoid disagreement may do so, provided it does not become waswasah.
ConclusionConclusion
Knowing the nullifiers of wudu helps a Muslim maintain the validity of his prayer and worship with calmness. A Muslim should learn what nullifies wudu with evidence, avoid carelessness when certain that hadath occurred, and also avoid waswasah, because the Sharia is built upon ease, certainty, and removing hardship. Whoever performed wudu with certainty should not leave that purification except with certainty.
