Hajj and UmrahWhat Should a Muslim Do After Hajj or Umrah?
All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and companions.
Hajj and Umrah are among the greatest acts of worship by which a Muslim draws near to Allah. They train the servant in tawhid, sincerity, patience, avoiding sins, and honoring the symbols of Allah. The purpose is not for worship to end when the rituals end and then for the Muslim to return to heedlessness. Rather, one of the greatest signs of benefiting from the rites is that a person returns with a more righteous heart, a more remembering tongue, more guarded prayers, and better dealings with people.
Complete Hajj and Umrah for Allah. [Al-Baqarah 2:196]
Whoever honors the symbols of Allah, indeed it is from the taqwa of hearts. [Al-Hajj 22:32]
Whoever Allah enables to perform Hajj or Umrah should praise Allah for this blessing, ask Him for acceptance and steadfastness, and make his return the beginning of a more truthful life with Allah.
Gratitude1. Thank Allah for the Blessing of Being Enabled
The first thing a Muslim should do after Hajj or Umrah is thank Allah. Reaching His Sacred House, performing the rites, and returning safely are all from Allah’s favor alone.
Whatever blessing you have is from Allah. [An-Nahl 16:53]
If you are grateful, I will surely increase you. [Ibrahim 14:7]
A Muslim should not view Hajj or Umrah as a mere personal achievement, but as a blessing from Allah that deserves gratitude.
Acceptance2. Ask Allah Often for Acceptance
The righteous early Muslims feared that their deeds might not be accepted, even while striving in obedience. A wise person does not become amazed by his deeds or claim acceptance for himself. He combines good thoughts of Allah with fear of his own shortcomings.
أُولَئِكَ يُسَارِعُونَ فِي الخَيْرَاتِ وَهُمْ لَهَا سَابِقُونَ}Those who give what they give while their hearts are fearful because they will return to their Lord; they are the ones who hasten to good deeds. [Al-Mu'minun 23:60-61]
Our Lord, accept from us. Indeed, You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing. [Al-Baqarah 2:127]
So let him often say: Our Lord, accept from us. O Allah, make it an accepted Hajj or accepted Umrah. O Allah, grant us steadfastness and uprightness after it.
Prayer3. Preserve Prayer After Returning
One of the greatest fruits of Hajj and Umrah is that a Muslim returns more careful with prayer. Whoever stood before Allah in tawaf, sa'i, and dua should guard the greatest obligation after the two testimonies of faith.
Maintain the prayers and the middle prayer, and stand before Allah devoutly. [Al-Baqarah 2:238]
Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers at fixed times. [An-Nisa 4:103]
It is a great loss for someone to return from the House of Allah and then neglect prayer or delay it without excuse.
Repentance4. Make Hajj or Umrah the Beginning of Sincere Repentance
Whoever performs Hajj or Umrah should return determined to leave sins, especially the sins he used to fall into before his journey.
Repent to Allah all together, O believers, so that you may succeed. [An-Nur 24:31]
Fear Allah wherever you are, follow a bad deed with a good deed and it will erase it, and deal with people with good character.
Narrated by At-Tirmidhi; graded hasan by a number of scholars.
If a sin keeps repeating, begin with a clear plan: avoid its causes, leave bad company, close the doors of temptation, make much istighfar, seek Allah’s help, and do not give up.
Steadfastness5. Be Upright After Returning and Do Not Worship Allah Only in Seasons
A Muslim rejoices in blessed seasons, but he does not worship Allah only during seasons. The Lord he worshiped in Makkah and Madinah is his Lord at home, work, the marketplace, and among his family.
{فَاسْتَقِمْ كَمَا أُمِرْتَ وَمَنْ تَابَ مَعَكَ وَلَا تَطْغَوْا إِنَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ بَصِيرٌ}So remain upright as you have been commanded, and those who repent with you, and do not transgress. Indeed, He sees what you do. [Hud 11:112]
Say: I believe in Allah, then remain upright.
Narrated by Muslim.
Steadfastness after Hajj or Umrah means steady prayer, a portion of Qur'an, morning and evening adhkar, leaving the haram, good character, kindness to parents, and maintaining family ties.
Sincerity6. Do Not Become Amazed by Your Deed or Boast About It
One disease of deeds is that a Muslim returns from Hajj or Umrah seeing himself as superior to others, repeatedly mentioning his deed in a boastful way, or thinking worship has removed the need for continued struggle against the self.
{يَمُنُّونَ عَلَيْكَ أَنْ أَسْلَمُوا قُلْ لَا تَمُنُّوا عَلَيَّ إِسْلَامَكُمْ بَلِ اللَّهُ يَمُنُّ عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْ هَدَاكُمْ لِلإِيمَانِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ}They consider it a favor to you that they accepted Islam. Say: Do not consider your Islam a favor to me; rather, Allah has favored you by guiding you to faith, if you are truthful. [Al-Hujurat 49:17]
The servant does not favor Allah with his obedience; Allah is the One who favored him with guidance and success. A sign of sincerity is that the servant becomes more humble after the deed, not more self-impressed.
Consistency7. Do More Righteous Deeds, Even If They Are Few
Wisdom after returning is not to burden yourself beyond your ability and then stop completely. Rather, stay consistent upon small, regular deeds.
The most beloved deeds to Allah are those done consistently, even if they are few.
Agreed upon.
- Praying on time.
- Reading a daily portion of Qur'an, even if small.
- Morning and evening adhkar.
- Duha prayer when possible.
- Weekly or monthly charity.
- Fasting three days each month.
- Maintaining family ties and honoring parents.
- Leaving one recurring sin, with patience and struggle.
Character8. Repair Your Relationship with People
Hajj and Umrah train the Muslim in patience, leaving argumentation, good character, and bearing people’s harm.
Whoever undertakes Hajj therein, there should be no obscene speech, no sin, and no arguing during Hajj... and take provision, for the best provision is taqwa. [Al-Baqarah 2:197]
So carry the character of patience and leaving disputes into your home, family, neighborhood, and workplace. Apologize to those you wronged, return rights, and restrain your tongue from backbiting, insults, and argumentation.
Ask9. If a Mistake Happened in the Rites, Ask the People of Knowledge
Some people return from Hajj or Umrah and then remember that they may have left an obligation, committed a prohibition of ihram, or doubted a tawaf or sa'i. They should not remain trapped in whispers, nor give themselves a verdict without knowledge. Rather, they should ask trustworthy scholars and explain the situation accurately.
Ask the people of knowledge if you do not know. [An-Nahl 16:43]
Some mistakes require nothing, while others may require a fidyah, sacrifice, or correction. Rulings differ according to ignorance, forgetfulness, intentional action, ability, and excuse.
Dhikr10. Increase in the Remembrance of Allah After Completing the Rites
Allah legislated remembrance after great acts of worship, including after the rites of Hajj.
{فَإِذَا قَضَيْتُمْ مَنَاسِكَكُمْ فَاذْكُرُوا اللَّهَ كَذِكْرِكُمْ آبَاءَكُمْ أَوْ أَشَدَّ ذِكْرًا}When you have completed your rites, remember Allah like your remembrance of your fathers, or with even greater remembrance. [Al-Baqarah 2:200]
The successful person does not cut off the remembrance of Allah after the rites end. He returns with a tongue moist with dhikr, preserving adhkar, making much istighfar, and using his time in what brings him closer to his Lord.
Good SignsGood Signs After Hajj or Umrah
A Muslim does not claim acceptance for himself, but there are good signs by which he hopes for good:
- He is better after the rites than before them.
- He becomes more careful with prayer.
- He dislikes returning to sins.
- His heart softens toward Qur'an and dhikr.
- His character improves with family and people.
- He remains consistent upon some obedience, even if little.
- He remains fearful of shortcomings while hoping in Allah’s mercy.
WarningsCommon Mistakes After Hajj or Umrah
- Returning to abandoning prayer or delaying it.
- Leaving morning and evening adhkar after the tongue had been moist with talbiyah and dua.
- Becoming amazed by the deed and assuming sins were forgiven without fearing shortcomings.
- Returning to bad company and forbidden habits.
- Neglecting to ask about ritual mistakes when there is a real concern.
- Turning Hajj or Umrah into memories and pictures only, without practical effect on the heart and behavior.
- Becoming overly strict with an unrealistic program and then stopping completely.
QuestionDoes an accepted Hajj forgive sins?
Yes. The great virtue of an accepted Hajj is established. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever performs Hajj for Allah and does not engage in obscene speech or sin returns like the day his mother gave birth to him.” Agreed upon. He also said: “Umrah to Umrah is an expiation for what is between them, and an accepted Hajj has no reward except Paradise.” Agreed upon. However, people’s rights are not removed by wishful thinking. Whoever owes money, has wronged someone, or holds a trust must return rights or seek pardon.
QuestionWhat does “accepted Hajj” mean?
An accepted Hajj is one performed with sincerity and following the Sunnah, free of obscenity and sin, accompanied by righteousness, goodness, and good character. Scholars mention that one of its signs is that the person returns better than he was, more inclined to obedience and farther from sin.
QuestionDo I have to change my whole life after Hajj or Umrah?
What is required is that you are truthful with Allah and begin with what you are able to do. You do not have to change every detail of your life in one day, but there must be a real beginning: preserving prayer, leaving haram, returning rights, and maintaining a righteous deed even if small.
QuestionWhat should I do if I become weak after returning?
Repent to Allah immediately and do not despair. Weakness does not mean your worship did not benefit you; it reminds you of your need for Allah. Return to prayer and dhikr, avoid the causes of sin, and often supplicate: O Turner of hearts, keep my heart firm upon Your religion.
QuestionShould I repeat Umrah often after returning?
Umrah is a great act of worship, but the best approach is to care for following the Sunnah, fulfilling obligations, honoring parents, preserving rights, giving charity, and remaining steadfast. Repeating Umrah requires consideration of the Sunnah, ability, not neglecting obligations, not harming people, and not taking on unnecessary hardship.
QuestionWhat if I remember a mistake in Hajj or Umrah?
Ask trustworthy scholars and do not rely on assumptions or whispers. Explain exactly what happened: was it due to ignorance, forgetfulness, or deliberate action? Did you leave a pillar or obligation, or commit a prohibition? The ruling changes according to the situation.
ConclusionConclusion
Whoever Allah enables to perform Hajj or Umrah has been given a great opening of good. He should preserve this blessing with gratitude, asking for acceptance, repentance, and steadfastness. The greatest thing he returns with from the House of Allah is not pictures or memories, but a heart more truthful with Allah, prayer more carefully guarded, a tongue more remembering, better character, and a firm resolve to obey Allah until he meets Him.
